Perhaps our ancient ancestors found it quite useful. Facial hair, that is. If you ask many men and almost all women, if they had a way to completely remove facial hair, they would do it. Both men and women often look for a way to remove mustaches, beards, eyebrows and the odd stray hair. There are plenty of ways to do this at home; however, the hair always grows back over time. For permanent facial hair removal you will need to consider a cosmetic procedure.

Laser Facial Hair Removal

For those who can afford a slightly more expensive treatment then at home treatments, laser hair removal is good choice. It is the procedure of choice for most women. This type of facial hair removal uses a micro-laser which goes underneath the surface of the skin and vaporizes the hair root. This effectively leaves the hair follicle completely without hair and it can take several weeks or even months for the hair to re-grow in an area that has been treated.

Laser hair removal is not a permanent process, unfortunately, and has to be repeated on a regular basis to stay “facial hair free.”  This is because this type of cosmetic procedure does not actually kill the hair follicle. The method can be irritating to the skin of some patients or on delicate skin, such as the eyebrows and upper lip. Ask your physician about the likelihood of a reaction or irritation from laser facial hair removal.

Electrolysis

For those who are looking for a permanent fix for facial hair growth, electrolysis is the answer. Perhaps surprisingly, electrolysis is a popular facial hair removal process for men.  This slightly invasive method involves the application of small electrical currents to the actual hair follicles through a needle. The electrical stimulation kills the hair follicle deep in the skin and prevents hair growth permanently.

Keep in mind that electrolysis often requires several treatment sessions before it has the desired effect. Since electrolysis destroys each hair follicle individually, some follicles may have hair fragments that aren’t removed by a single treatment.  So for example, the first session may remove all of the visible hairs while also killing the associated hair follicles. Within a week or two though, new hairs will appear that were too small to be removed during the first session i.e. they hadn’t broken through the surface of the skin. These will need to be removed during a second (or third) treatment session.

The process of electrolysis can be a bit painful, especially if you have sensitive skin, and it can leave your skin dry and irritated. It does result in permanent facial hair removal though, so many people are willing to endure the temporary discomfort for a long term benefit. The physician will use agents on the skin that make the process less uncomfortable.

Facial hair removal is not just for woman. Many men desire to leave their days of shaving behind. The two procedures mentioned above can be used to thin moustaches, beards and eyebrows in both men and women. They can be used to shape and tidy facial hair in these regions as well. Both facial hair removal procedures can be somewhat expensive, but for those that suffer from excess facial hair, it is well worth the cost.
