How to Find and Choose a Cervical Cancer Surgeon Specialist

Finding a Cervical Cancer Surgeon

Talking about cervical cancer surgery is a tough and deeply emotional topic for many women. Though hysterectomies remain one of the most prevalent surgical treatments, some patients balk at the idea. It is a good option for many—but is it the only option? There has been criticism leveled at oncologists in recent years for their apparent over eagerness to jump to hysterectomies as the be-all, end-all solution. Thus, one of the most important qualities that a cervical cancer surgeon can possess is an open-mind and approachability. Above all, you should feel comfortable confronting your surgeon with any and all questions, doubts, concerns, and suggestions you have regarding your health.

Keeping Your Options Open

During your preliminary consultations with your surgeon, you should go in with almost no expectations. Rely on your surgeon to present the case as objectively as possible—to list possibilities and treatments without leaning on you to go for one or the other. He or she should give you information first, and only if asked for, opinions second. If you feel that your surgeon is pressuring you to go in one direction right from the outset, then perhaps you should reevaluate his or her professionalism.

In a similar vein, a second opinion can help shape your perspective. Go to a second, or even a third, fourth, or fifth surgeon to ask about possible approaches to treatment. By the time you’ve consulted several medical professionals, you should have a truly well-rounded idea of your options. With this information to back you up, making a good decision will be far easier.

Turning the Tables

Now that you’ve asked your surgeon for information about you and your health, it’s time to turn the tables and ask about his or her experience. You need to know as much as possible about each potential surgeon before you can make a fully informed choice between each one. Here’s a list to get you started:

  • What types of cervical cancer surgery have you performed?
  • Do you specialize in the type that I want?
  • How many such operations have you performed over your medical career?
  • How many were performed in the last two years?
  • Have you received updated training for any cervical cancer surgeries?
  • Do you hold any specialized degrees or awards for cervical cancer surgery?
  • Do you have a team that you work with?
  • Do you have a particular surgical center with facilities appropriate to my surgery?
  • Are you a member of any surgical societies?
  • What is your educational history, and what are your certifications?

Some Snooping

…Never hurts when your long-term health and fertility are on the line. Don’t take your surgeon’s words at face value; there’s something to be said for being a skeptic. Contact former patients for their take on the surgeon’s medical and social skills. Ask other medical professionals, such as your general physician, and do some investigation into the surgeon’s general reputation.
