Liposuction for Men

Â
Liposuction, and all cosmetic surgeries for that matter, is performed on far more women than men. In fact, for every one liposuction performed on a man, seven are performed on women. Nevertheless, cosmetic procedures, including liposuction are growing in popularity among men. There has been a strong surge in cases occurring over the past decade. Men care about the way their bodies look. Men flex in front of the mirror, pinch flab, and look at themselves from all angles. Men get liposuction.
Â
Part of the reason for the surge in male cosmetic cases has come from the lessening of taboos and morays that had traditionally prevented many, especially men, from seeking out these procedures. Also, advertising campaigns became more focused on the male demographic; plastic surgeons were saying, “here is what we have to offer you guys” and “real men get cosmetic surgery.”
Â
The campaign worked.
Â
In the United States in 2007, there were well over 50,000 liposuction procedures performed on men. What body areas are being targeted by men for liposuction? Men seek out liposuction for many of the same trouble areas that women do: abdomen, sides and even upper legs. But they also request liposuction of areas that you might not immediately consider, such as the breast region. In fact, breast reduction both through liposuction and surgical resection, was the fourth most common cosmetic surgical procedure performed in men in 2007 with over 20,000 procedures performed.
Â
Over this time men were also warming to the idea that plastic and cosmetic surgery could be performed without anyone realizing that the surgery had taken place. Perhaps a vacation from work could be an excuse for a man to have liposuction and subsequently recover. Add a spray tan and everyone at work thinks you had a restful and rejuvenating vacation with plenty of working out.
Â
Plastic surgeons also realized that putative patients were avoiding the procedure because of the stigma attached to liposuction in men. Surgeons became more discreet with male patients; scheduling appointments far enough apart that patients would not meet each other in the waiting room and arranging post-op recovery in private rooms. This atmosphere of confidentiality and privacy was appreciated, leading to more men making the decision to get liposuction.
Â
Liposuction in men is not simply liposuction performed on a different gender. Liposuction in men is usually more difficult for the surgeon to perform mainly because fat deposits in men are more fibrous (contain hard, stringy fibers) and therefore it requires more work to disrupt the fatty deposits. Moreover, the areas that are elected by men for liposuction are notoriously more fibrous anyway such as the breast and “love handles.” Men, being larger people in general, usually require a larger quantity of fat to be removed. As a result of these factors, liposuction in men tends to be a bit more expensive on average than it is in women.
Â
If you are a man considering liposuction, it may be reasonable for you to locate plastic and aesthetic surgeons in your area that have specific experience in performing liposuction on men. These practitioners are usually skilled in dealing with the unique challenges of liposuction in men and are also equipped to deliver male liposuction with the utmost discretion.
