Male Cosmetic Surgery

It is no secret that most cosmetic procedures are performed on women. In fact, for every procedure that is performed in men, there are about ten procedures performed on women. But the number of male cosmetic surgeries is growing and has been for many years. As many of the taboos of plastic surgery are fading for both genders, men are beginning to see the value of cosmetic surgery and feeling less of the stigma. This article tells you who is having male cosmetic surgery, what procedures are being performed, and which procedures are the most discreet.

Liposuction dominates as the most common cosmetic surgical procedure, regardless of gender. In 2007, nearly 60,000 liposuction procedures were performed on men. This procedure, especially with recent adaptations of older approaches, can be performed quickly, with little preparation and minimal recovery. Depending on which region from which fat is being removed (usually the abdomen and sides in men), the incision and resulting scar can be greatly minimized or hidden. All that you are left with is trimmer, leaner physique.

The next most common male cosmetic surgery is eyelid surgery. Many men want to reduce or reverse the signs of aging by removing the fat and excess skin from around the eyes in a procedure known as blepharoplasty. While there is some preparation and recovery, many men are willing to undergo surgery for a result equivalent to making the face appear decades younger.

Rhinoplasty, or a nose job is the next most commonly performed male cosmetic surgery. This procedure can be performed open or closed. In the closed approach, all skin incisions are made inside the nostril so there is no visible scar of the nose. Many men wishing to correct a deviated septum or align a broken nose that healed improper seek the services of a plastic surgeon. Beyond this, some men just want a more attractive nose and for them, rhinoplasty is the answer.

Perhaps surprisingly, the fourth most common male cosmetic surgery is breast reduction. While diet and exercise can help reduce male breast tissue, some are afflicting with a disease called gynecomastia. In this illness, which has many different causes, men develop breast tissue. When this occurs, it can difficult to reverse medically thus making surgery the only viable option. Regardless of the cause of excess fat or tissue in the chest, there were over 20,000 male breast reductions performed in the United States in 2007.

Rounding out the top five male cosmetic surgical procedures is hair transplant surgery. Male pattern baldness affects millions of American men and leaves them with few corrective options. While many try pills or topical hair growth medications, hair replacement surgery ends up being the only definitive way to grow normal looking hair over the entire scalp. Unfortunately, the procedure usually takes several treatments and the scalp is left in a state of repair for a long time. While other male cosmetic surgeries are quick and discreet, most hair transplantation surgeries are not, which could be why it is not performed more often.

In addition to these top male cosmetic surgeries, men are having implants placed in various locations such as the pectoral muscles, calves muscles and in the abdomen. Face lift surgery is fairly common in men with or without chin and jaw implants. There are a number of nonsurgical male cosmetic procedures performed each year. BOTOX, laser hair removal, and microdermabrasion are but a few of the types of nonsurgical male cosmetic procedures performed—the number of these procedures performed on men exceeding half a million each year.
