It is estimated that over half of men aged 35+ suffer with some degree of hair loss and so it is no wonder that thousands of individuals each year are consulting plastic surgeons for a solution. Male hair loss treatments are varied and choosing the right one will depend on a large number of circumstances, including:

  • The age of the individual,
  • The degree of hair loss,
  • The type of hair loss e.g. receding hairline, thinning patches, baldness etc.,
  • The availability of suitable donor hair from other areas of the body,
  • The general health of the individual.

Hair Transplant

The basic hair transplant process starts with the harvesting of donor hair from a suitable area of the patient’s body. This is normally the back or the side of the scalp however donor hair can also be taken from the back or the chest area if necessary. Once this has been done the area of scalp that is going to accept the hair (and the associated follicles) is prepared. This form of male hair loss treatment involves punching microscopic holes in the skin so that a single hair from the donor hair graft can be transplanted into each.

Hair transplantation is a painstaking task; however, the entire procedure rarely takes more than 5 to 6 hours to complete. The exact length of time depends on the number of grafts required—a receding hairline will take much less time than the crown of the head.

Following the initial hair transplantation procedure the patient can go home immediately. The grafted hair may fall out during the next few weeks however the healthy follicles will continue to produce new hair from then on. It is customary to have a follow-up appointment around 6 months after the surgery so that the plastic surgeon can assess the degree of hair growth and decide if a secondary transplant is required.

Most cases of severe male hair loss do require several treatments and so it can take 2-3 years before the patient fully benefits from a natural looking head of hair.

Other Male Hair Loss Treatments

Another popular treatment for male hair loss is known as laser hair restoration. This procedure uses specific wavelengths of light emitted from a laser to stimulate the blood supply within the scalp tissues. The increased blood supply delivers essential nutrients to the hair follicles and promotes their activity. The result is that the natural hair is encouraged to grow and further hair loss is reduced or stopped completely.

This male hair loss treatment is often used in conjunction with hair transplantation so that the grafted hairs are stimulated further and additional hair growth is seen. It is also common to apply topical creams and lotions to the grafted area that are designed to help combat natural hair loss in both men and women. When used together, these three male hair loss treatments can halt or reverse most cases of hair loss and provide a natural looking head of hair.
