Microdermabrasion

Microdermabrasion is an extremely safe aesthetic procedure that “freshens” the face by removing the outer layers of dead and damaged skin. Microdermabrasion can be thought of as a small sand blaster for the skin. The skin is sprayed with a tiny stream of crystals that dislodges any dead skin cells. A small hose is attached to the instrument to remove the crystals and dead skin cells. The procedure is painless and can reduce the apparent depth of fine wrinkles and remove some unwanted pigmentation. It is often used to improve fine lines, age spots, and certain acne scars. Microdermabrasion should not be confused with dermabrasion which involves using one of several tools to physically scrape or abrade the face. Dermabrasion is used to soften the edges of facial scars and deep wrinkles. Microdermabrasion is a gentler process that can only correct fine skin abnormalities and damage. It cannot be used to correct deep acne scars or extreme discolorations of the skin. The procedure is similar to other exfoliation techniques with the added benefit of being able to reduce minor skin imperfections. Keep in mind that this procedure is not covered by health insurance and can cost between $75 and $200 per treatment. Each treatment session lasts about an hour and many patients need multiple treatments to achieve their desired result. As with any aesthetic procedure it is important to verify that your medical professional is properly trained, certified and experienced with microdermabrasion. Also, it is important to have realistic expectations regarding treatment outcomes and someone knowledgeable in all skin resurfacing techniques should be consulted prior to treatment.
