The nose is one of the most distinctive features on the face. It is also one of the main things that can influence facial attractiveness. It is not surprising that people are often unhappy with the nose they are born with or the nose that develops as they grow into adulthood. Moreover, the delicate cartilage of the nose is particularly susceptible to trauma--even small injuries can break and change the shape of the nose. For these reasons, many people seek nose reshaping surgery.

Bigger, smaller, thinner, more straight

Most patients seeking nose reshaping surgery have big plans for their nose. They have investigated their own nose from various angles and have determined what changes that they would like to see. Most women would like a decrease in the overall size of the nose. Many men wish to correct an old injury or deviated septum. Flattening humps or ridges along the length of the nose is extremely common in both genders—most people want a straight nose from bridge to tip.

Realistic expectations

It is important to remember that the plastic surgeon has a limited area with which to work and a limited amount of tissue from which to build this nasal masterpiece. Each nose reshaping surgery requires careful planning and a thorough description of the patient’s goals and wishes. Many plastic surgeons will use a computer program to provide patients with a photo of their current nose and an enhanced version that shows the intended outcome. While many plastic surgeons are extremely skilled and can closely approximate the nose that appeared on the screen prior to surgery, precise adherence to an ideal may not always be possible. It is important to have realistic expectations regarding nose reshaping surgery.

Nothing like the first time

Also keep in mind that anyone’s first cosmetic nose reshaping surgery is the easiest for the surgeon. This is because all of the tissue is native and natural, it has a good blood supply, and it is completely healthy. The second and subsequent nose reshaping surgeries are more challenging and almost always more expensive. A second nose reshaping surgery is usually done to improve upon the results of a first nose reshaping surgery; however, the second procedure is less likely to achieve a patient’s ideal nose because the original tissue is no longer available. If you have ever seen a celebrity with serial nose reshaping surgeries you can see what can occur with multiple procedures.

Nose reshaping without surgery

For minor corrections to the contour of the nose, there are options for nose reshaping that do not involve surgery. Through a creative combination of botulinum toxin (BOTOX) injections and injectable fillers (like Radiesse), subtle bumps or lines in the nose can be evened out with surgery. This type of nose reshaping procedure is ideal for patients who want small changes for their nose, want to avoid surgery, or who cannot afford a more involved procedure. Your plastic surgeon will be able to determine if your nose reshaping can be accomplished without surgery.
