SmartLipo, also called laser lipolysis or laser-assisted liposuction, is an FDA-approved procedure for the reduction of stubborn fat areas that do not respond to diet and exercise. Laser energy is used to break down fat cells and liquefy the fatty contents in targeted areas. It can be used as a stand-alone procedure to reduce unwanted fat on almost any area of the face and body or may be used in conjunction with other liposuction procedures.

The procedure is performed on an outpatient basis with local anesthesia. In general, SmartLipo is either a noninvasive or minimally invasive procedure. In the noninvasive approach, the physician directs the laser light energy toward fat cells in the area just under the skin’s surface. When fat cells absorb the laser energy, they break apart and fat is either liquefied or vaporized. The liquefied fat will then be absorbed by the body over the next few days. In the minimally invasive method, small incisions are made and a solution containing an anesthetic infused. The laser is inserted through the incision and moved back and forth under the skin to break up and liquefy fat cells. Fat is then suctioned out in a manner similar to that of traditional liposuction.

By virtue of the laser energy it uses, SmartLipo offers a number of advantages. Small blood vessels are sealed by laser energy, which reduces the amount of bleeding and swelling in the treated area. Laser energy also stimulates the production of collagen resulting in a tighter, more toned appearance in the overlying skin. The reduced bleeding, swelling, bruising, and discomfort after the SmartLipo procedure make for a short recovery period and a quick return to normal activity.
Although some improvement in body shape is noticeable immediately after the procedure, noticeable changes continue for several weeks, particularly in terms of skin tightening—optimal results are typically seen in about eight weeks. Repeat treatment may be necessary to achieve optimal results in some body areas. The fat removal is permanent in the sense that new fat cells do not form beyond puberty, so those cells removed in SmartLipo will not return. However, existing fat cells increase or decrease in size based on weight gain or loss and no liposuction procedure can remove all fat cells. Thus, nutritionally sound eating habits and suitable exercise routines are needed to avoid expansion and weight gain of fat cells.

While recovery time will vary somewhat depending on the location treated and on the extent of the procedure, most patients are able to return to work in 24 to 48 hours. Some swelling and minor bruising are expected and generally disappear within a few days. Discomfort after the procedure is effectively managed using over-the-counter pain medications. In some cases, the physician may require the use of a compression garment to diminish swelling and aid healing.

As with all cosmetic surgery procedures, consultation with an experienced, qualified physician is necessary to determine whether Smartlipo is appropriate for each individual. The consultation is a time to ask unanswered questions, establish realistic expectations, and become aware of the risks, benefits, and possible complications associated with the SmartLipo procedure.
