The Cost of Surgery and Trends in Cosmetic Surgery Prices
Last updated: 02/02/2009
Â
The cost of plastic surgery has been rising gradually upwards in the past few years. Plastic surgery costs have something to do with the technological expenses and operating fees on the part of the surgeon, but they also have to do with supply and demand as well. Whatever the reason, cosmetic surgery prices begin in the thousands—in order to pay for surgery, you might have to tighten your budget a little and prioritize.
Â
The search for affordable plastic surgery can be an arduous one. But despite the hefty price tag, the cost of surgery doesn’t seem to be scaring away too many patients. In 2007, the total amount of cosmetic plastic surgery costs added up to $12.4 billion, as reported by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons. That’s a staggering increase of 59% over the combined sum of all cosmetic surgery prices in 2000. These numbers speak to the fact that, despite high plastic surgery costs, patients ultimately judged the immeasurable qualitative value of their operations to be worth every dollar. So just how did Americans spend their money? A few highlights below.*
Â
Men and Women
Â
Liposuction was the most popular cosmetic surgery procedure for both men and women in 2007. Liposuction costs averaged out at $2,920 per procedure. It is crucial to remember, however, that liposuction is one of the most variable cosmetic surgeries out there. Depending on your weight, shape, and the number of areas you want to target, your liposuction costs can veer dramatically from this national average. The amount that a large, heavy man and a small-framed woman pay for surgery might as well apply to two different procedures. Inquire carefully about your personal liposuction costs.
Â
Women Only
Â
Breast augmentation cost American women over a billion dollars in 2007, taking the top spot for the most popular cosmetic surgery procedure in this demographic. The total includes both silicone implants and saline implants. To break the numbers down further, breast augmentation cost women an average of $4,087 for silicone, while the cost of breast augmentation using saline rang in a little lower at $3,690.
Â
Tummy tucks also made quite a stir among American women in 2007. As the fourth most popular cosmetic surgery procedure, tummy tuck costs totaled $991,544,589. The average breaks down to $5,350—it’s a bit more expensive to pay for surgery of this kind than to cover the cost of ever-popular breast augmentation. Still, the factor of tummy tuck costs seemed to matter less than the potential benefits to morale and health.
Â
Men Only
Â
Among American males, gynecomastia surgery cost this portion of the population $70,068,803 and was the one of the five most popular cosmetic surgery procedures. The cost of the average gynecomastia surgery was $3,455 in 2007. Compare this to the average cost of breast reduction surgery for women, which was $5,417.
Â
Also filling in the other top five spots in 2007 were rhinoplasty and hair transplant operations. Hair transplant surgery cost an average of $5,874, though this number is derived from procedures done on both men and women. The full range of rhinoplasty costs came in at $661,376,647 in America overall, or $4,357 for each average operation.
Â
Plastic Surgery Costs - Non-Cosmetic
Â
Of course, plastic surgery that doesn’t fall into the cosmetic category also made a dent in Americans’ wallets. Widely performed surgeries that have non-aesthetic benefits include LASIK surgery and bariatric surgery, most commonly in the form of gastric bypass surgery. Average LASIK surgery costs were $2,105 per eye according to AllAboutVision.com, while bariatric surgery costs and gastric bypass surgery costs were in the range of $20,000 or so. The cost of surgery is still high for non-cosmetic procedures, but a special clause applies to patients worried about bariatric surgery costs and gastric bypass surgery costs: you may be eligible for financial assistance from your insurer.
Â
Is the Cost of Surgery Worth It?
Â
Plastic surgery costs are high; there’s no denying the fact. Many people who research cosmetic surgery prices—anything from liposuction costs to LASIK surgery costs—may be discouraged by the price tag. But in the end, the intangible benefits to your self-image, your confidence, your pride, can have lasting effects that are worth the lighter wallet. Affordable plastic surgery is still possible; there are many ways to pay for surgery without bankrupting yourself. Â
