Certain agents can harm heart muscles leading to abnormal rhythms or heart failure. Kidney and liver failure may occur which can threaten life. Most commonly the immune system is greatly suppressed by chemotherapy. It is critical to avoid infections during chemotherapy because these can be life-threatening during this period of reduced immunity. If an infection does occur, strong antibiotics should be administered without delay.
