Type of Surgery
In a cystectomy with ileal conduit, an incision is made in the patient's lower abdomen (A). The ureters are disconnected from the bladder, which is then removed (B). They are then attached to a section of ileum (small intestine) that has been removed and refashioned for that purpose (C). As a urologist, I've found it's easier to do the PSA test and then sit down with the patient and say here's what the results mean for you. Given what we know right now, that seems a very sensible approach.
