Preparation

The implantation of a phakic intraocular lens usually requires that a patient have a fairly stable and severe case of near or farsightedness. This is documented with an eye exam by a doctor of optometry or ophthalmology as well as an investigation...

of the retina, which requires chemical dilation of the pupils. Patients that are unhappy with glasses and contact lenses but are not candidates for laser vision correction are offered IOL surgery.

In addition to a regular eye exam, the eye will need to be carefully measured to determine the optimal implant type and placement. This involves some fairly sophisticated and proprietary measurements and calculations performed by the eye surgeon.

Some doctors will take cultures of the eye surface in order to determine which antibiotic eye drops should be used. Most people are required to use antibiotic eye drops in preparation of the surgery. Other kinds of eye drops may be required in order to expand or contract various chambers of the eye.

Other Information

Approximately 56% of all patients achieve results of 20/20 or better and over 90% achieve 20/40 or better (which is good enough to drive without corrective lenses in most regions).1 Those with moderate to high myopia (greater than 7 diopters) have a lesser chance of achieving that result. As technique and technology improve, the results continue to improve.
