The mortality associated with radiation therapy is usually a result of fibrotic changes and organ damage in healthy tissue. The normal function of an organ that is treated with radiation therapy may be compromised or destroyed. Part of the decision of whether to employ radiation therapy or not involves considering whether the benefit expected from treatment outweighs the risk to the surrounding tissue, life, and possible disability. If the risk of death from the radiation therapy is greater than the risk of death from the cancer itself, the treatment will not be done, except in palliative care cases.
