If the glaucoma or increased intraocular pressure is causing symptoms of pain, pressure, or visual disturbances, patients often report that the symptoms begin to resolve the day after the procedure. Patients can expect intraocular pressure to...

be reduced by 20 to 30 percent, which is usually enough for them to no longer qualify for a diagnosis of glaucoma. The use of eye drops for glaucoma decreases after the procedure in most patients. By one year after selective laser trabeculoplasty (SLT) nearly ninety percent of patients were able to decrease their use of glaucoma medications, and some no longer need glaucoma eye drops at all.

The single biggest predictor of the degree of benefit from selective laser trabeculoplasty is the degree of intraocular pressure prior to the procedure, but not in the direction that you might think. People with higher pressure within the eye have a better, more profound outcome after SLT than do patients in which intraocular pressure was not very high. This has led to the argument that patients may not be candidates for selective laser trabeculoplasty until intraocular pressure reaches at least 30 mmHg; however, this issue is still unresolved.

Surgeons aim for results of 20/20 or better so that you can perform most daily activities without your glasses. However, there is a possibility that after surgery, you may need to wear reading glasses or corrective lenses for at least some activities.
